Print-on-Demand Books
As an experienced publisher with more than 12 years of experience, over the years the Guild of Blades Publishing Group found many ways to
make production more efficient and to save the company money on printing and supplies. The Guild of Blades Retail Group is now able to
bring that same experience to its POD operations in order to save our clients money. One means of saving money on printing is to always use
the most cost effective combination of printed goods on the press being used. In this case, the press GOB Retail uses is most cost
effecient when printing everything on larger sheets of paper. So our default printing method is to print everything onto larger press sheets,
typically either 11" x 17" or 12" x 18" sheets. Sometimes, this means for best pricing, you will need to lay out your documents onto press
sheets of a specific size. This is not an issue, however, for typical 8.5" x 11" books (8.375" x 10.875" final trim), as we can take your
standard PDFs and tweak them on our entire for our press.
Book Sizes and Layout Specifications
All files should be submitted as print ready PDFs. We can also accept Word files, but only if you check with us first and we are able to
determine you used no special fonts. Book interiors should be single, multi page files. For best printing quality, if your
booklet interiors are to be printed in black and white, your artwork and page layouts elements should be formatted in black and white as
well. Your booklet cover should be a separate PDF file. All files should be set at 300 DPI. If, for any reason, you feel you have a file
that should be submitted at a higher resolution, give us a call first so we can discuss it with you. All fonts should be embedded into you
PDF files so there will be no accidental font substitution when we open the file and print. Please follow the booklet layouts specifications
as provided below for your booklet trim size. We will check flight each file before printing and will do our best to spot potential file
layout problems, but can not be held responsible for non obvious layout errors, mispellings, artwork not aligned right or other internal
file layout issues.
If your book is to have color page inserts in one or more locations, mixed into an otherwise B&W interior booklet, give us a call at 248-
430-4980 first so we can discuss your different layout options.
8.375" x 10.875" Books
Untrimmed size is 8.5" x 11". Interior Layout Specs
Layout book cover on 12" x 18" press sheet. Your cover size should be "11" x 17" plus a .2" bleed edge along all 4 borders, plus the width
of your book spine. This will make your artwork "11.40" x 17".40, plus your spine depth. Our standard interior paper type is a 60lb offset
if that helps you to gauge spine thickness. Obviously spine thickness will vary depending on page count and paper type. I highly recommend
giving us a call so we can talk about your page count and choice of paper and we can help to give you an accurate spine thickness. If your
page count will be over 150 pages, we may have to work with you to modify your bleed margins a bit. Your artwork should be centered on the
press sheet and any text of images placed on the spine should be centered where possible.
